Koenji is a district of Tokyo in the Suginami ward, west of Shinjuku, it takes about 17 minutes from Shinjuku by train (Chuo-Sobu Line). The district's name originates from the old temples in the area, and as you expected, there are a quite few old temples and shrines still remaining.
The area has very cozy laid-back atmosphere, and interestingly, it used to be a center of Japanese punk rock scene in 1970's, so that the are is known for its very unique mixture of underground and pop culture. There are a lot of unique vintage clothe shops, cafe, bars and etc.
